The International Society for Microbial Ecology is the principle non-profit scientific society for the burgeoning field of Microbial Ecology and its related disciplines. ISME fosters the exchange of scientific information by organizing international symposia as well as specific workshops, sponsoring publications, and promoting education/research. The society hands out numerous (financial /travel) awards during its symposia and provides services to the scientific as well as the wider community.
3 Key Activities

The society enjoys close collaborations with other key scientific organizations, and has established effective scientific interactions in all geographical regions through a network of scientific leaders who serve as ISME National Ambassadors.
Goals: establishing a healthy number of memberships, expanding membership benefits, sponsoring/co-organize external events (workshops, meetings, lectures), providing travel grants.
Organized every two years, are the largest not-for-profit international meetings addressing the wide range of topics in Microbial Ecology. The last meeting held was ISME16, Montreal, Canada, August 2016
The next meeting, ISME17, will be held in Leipzig, Germany 2018.
Goals: to display the current international trends and topics in microbial ecology by organizing lectures, roundtables, poster viewing sessions and social events, with a break-even budget.
The ISME Journal
The journal is produced by ISME Publications bv in coorporation with Springer Nature. It currently holds impact factor 9 and addresses interdisciplinary microbial ecology. The scope and access of the journal is can be found on our homepage.
