The PhD candidate will work both in the groups "Microbial Ecology" and “Trace gas chemistry”, and collaborate with other team members of the project EVAR (Effects of variability in physical forcing on carbon and oxygen budgets). The major task will be to investigate regulating mechanisms of trace gas production (N2O, CH4) in the Benguela upwelling system (Namibia) and to identify responsible microorganisms. In the frame of this project two expeditions with the research vessel Meteor of several weeks and accompanying laboratory studies with microbial communities at IOW are planned. The departments Biological Oceanography and Marine Chemistry of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) are offering a
PhD position in Biogeochemistry/Marine Microbiology
(26 hours/week) at the earliest convenient date. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the TV-L salary scale at level EG 13 monthly gross salary. The employment is temporary for 3 years.
The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within the framework of a joint research program.

Job description
Marine oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) are important sites of trace gas production (e.g., N2O, CH4). In the project EVAR (Effects of variability in physical forcing on carbon and oxygen budgets; see https://www.io-warnemuende.de/evar.html ) we will investigate trace gas production in the OMZ of the Benguela upwelling system (Namibia). The PhD student will have the unique opportunities to work both in the groups "Microbial Ecology" and “Trace gas chemistry and to combine ship-based field work with lab experiments in order to investigate regulating mechanisms of trace gas production and to identify responsible microorganisms. In the frame of this project two ship expeditions of several weeks in Namibia and accompanying laboratory studies with microbial communities at IOW are planned. State-of-the-art trace gas analytics, stable isotope techniques and molecular microbial approaches will be applied. The successful applicant will work closely together with two PostDocs addressing microbial community functional analysis and trace gas transport and flux.

Qualification
MSc in Biology, Chemistry, Geology or related field is mandatory; good background in marine biogeochemistry and microbiology; experiences with process rate measurements and molecular/bioinformatics methods for microbial community
analysis, are desirable. Willingness to participate in research expeditions and to pursue research in an interdisciplinary framework is expected.
