Pam Engelberts

Pam Engelberts is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Microbiome Research at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.

She is a microbial ecologist interested in syntrophic interactions between microorganisms in environmental and host-associated systems. Her main research focuses on the development of novel fluorescence in situ hybridisation techniques to study these syntrophic interactions at the strain-level.

Pam grew up in the Netherlands and obtained a Bsc in Biology at Leiden University and a Msc in Marine microbiology at the University of Amsterdam. During her Msc. she moved to Australia, where she studied the sponge microbiome at the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE). This work was followed by a PhD at ACE, which focused on characterising microbial communities using numerous culture-independent techniques.

Pam is passionate about science communication and is the Deputy Director of JAMS Brisbane, an organisation committed to amplifying the voices of younger scientists.
